Meet Kami Watson
What is your name and where is your home?
Kami Watson, Huntsville, AL
Describe your creative process.
My process can be both outcome oriented and intuitive, sometimes independently and other times concurrently. Often I focus on creating with an objective to challenge myself and learn something along the way. I am always exploring new techniques or alternative ways to reach an outcome. Through both success and failure, I know I will learn something, and in turn I incorporate that knowledge into future work.
Describe your piece in the exhibition and its connection to the theme.
Using wool fiber, twine, and other materials found in my studio, this piece was created to embody the elements of a bird’s nest, embracing strength, beauty, and the intricacy of materials woven together to create a space that is both safe and protective. It is the result of researching techniques to create encapsulations within layers through wet felting over multiple resists, and further explores the use of natural fibers in combination with non-organic materials to create form. The piece itself provides both visual and functional purpose, as it can be both wall art or worn as embellishment around one’s neck.
What is something you could happily look at every day for the rest of your life?
Ocean Sunsets. They are never the same, yet always beautiful, and each one offers time and space for reflection; all while the sound of the ocean regulates my being and encourages me to hold each moment in gratitude.
What is your favorite material?
I work primarily with wool fiber, but often incorporate other fibers and textiles with it. The idea of manipulating raw fibers to create a textile with just soap, water, and my hands will always be magical, even with my understanding of the how’s and whys.
